New England Patriots Player Duron Harmon Turned Away by Costa Rica

Duron Harmon, who plays safety for the New England Patriots, was not allowed to enter Costa Rica because he attempted to bring marijuana into the Central American country, said law enforcement officials in the country.

Police at the Costa Rica international airport discovered Duron was carrying 58 grams of cannabis that was inside an ice tea can, three pipes containing cannabis oil, THC candy and four containers of compressed marijuana that weighed 4.3 grams, reported La Nacion the largest newspaper in Costa Rica.

Harmon, who is 27, arrived to Costa Rica on a flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and was detained for a brief time before being sent back to the U.S.

The Fiscal Control Police Director Irving Malespin told La Nacion that the incident involved a player from the NFL who attempted to enter the country while in possession of marijuana.

Malespin said that the individual was sent back to the U.S. and added that it was important to point out the work of the different police who carry out important operations throughout the country to ensure that undesirable people are prevented from entering the country.

The Patriots, in a prepared statement released on Saturday, said they were aware of an issue that involved Harmon in Costa Rica on Friday. The statement added that Harmon was back in the U.S., the team was seeking additional information and had no further comment at the current time.

Through social media, Harmon posted apologies to his family and the Patriots saying he apologized with all his heart.

Friday is not representative of who he is or the person he strives to be, said Harmon in his posts. He added that he was committed to doing everything within his power to regain the respect and trust of everyone who supports him as a role model, person, friend and athlete.

Last season, Harmon had 23 tackles and four interceptions for the AFC Champions and has been with New England for the entire five years he has played in the NFL.

No official comment has been released by the NFL about the Harmon incident and it is unknown if he will face a fine or suspension for what took place due to the incident allegedly involving marijuana. The NFL is likely carrying out its own investigation in will release it findings in due time.
