Venezuela's new Constituent Assembly declares itself superior to all other government bodies

Russian oil major to stick with Venezuela despite crisis

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened #Venezuela with #Military Intervention, escalating U.S. response to the crisis now going on in the country, a move Caracas described as "craziness".

"This is our neighbor", Trump said in reference to Venezuela. Trump added that Washington is considering several options to intervene in Venezuela, one of them being military action should its need arise.

Delcy Rodríguez, rejected threats of the United States to attack Venezuela militarily and reasserted the support of Venezuelan people to President Nicolas Maduro.

His remarks are the first by a high-level Venezuelan official and come ahead of an expected statement by Maduro's government.

Late Friday, the White House announced that Maduro had requested a phone call with Trump that day and that Trump had turned him down, saying that he will not speak to the leader until "democracy is restored in that country".

It's unclear if Trump would even have the constitutional authority to send troops to the South American country without congressional approval.

On July 31 the United States imposed legal and financial sanctions against the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, describing as a "dictator".

The political crisis in Venezuela appears to grow more volatile. Maduro and former Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez have long argued that the US has been trying to undermine them and want to force a coup in the country.

Trump said Friday that he had not ruled out possible military action in Venezuela in response to growing political and social turmoil in the country.

Some experts say that Trump's aggressive comments could work in Maduro's favor, helping the leader to boost his standing as Venezuela's defender.

Ben Sasse, a senator from Nebraska and a member of the Senate Armed Service Committee, criticized the new position of the President on the Venezuelan crisis.

The power struggle between the government and the opposition has led to months of violent confrontations that have left more than 100 people dead, including protesters, government supporters and security forces.

Venezuela is in a state of turmoil as Maduro's party moves to strengthen its grip on power. "Here I am", he reportedly said during a speech at the constituent assembly, a new body that was elected amid worldwide condemnation and allegations of electoral fraud late last month.
