Valve Reveals Two New Heroes Coming to Dota 2

'Artifact' Announcement: All the Available Details for Valve's 'Dota 2' Card Game So Far

The International 2017 Dota 2 tournament came to an end with a bang.

Valve unveiled a teaser for a new card game called "Artifact" to be released in 2018.

It's still too early to predict how the game will perform in the already saturated digital card game genre.

Let's start with what the game actually is. Much of Dota 2's cast is based off of characters from the first game. According to host Sean "Day9" Plott who made the reveal, "anything you see in 'Dota, ' it's here".

Artifact will feature similarities as other digital card games in terms of cards representing creatures and spells.

Using the concept of lanes from DotA 2 and other MOBAs, Artifact will have three boards that players will battle over. The heroes have different abilities and can be moved between the boards. Long-time fans of "Dota 2" may remember that the game's development was highly influenced by a very popular custom-made map for the game "Warcraft 3" called "Defense of the Ancients", where the "Dota" name comes from.

If players manage to kill enemy heroes and creeps then they will be rewarded with gold which players can spend to buy "item cards" which players can equip to heroes.

It remains to be seen whether Artifact will be able to pry players away from the premier digital card game, Blizzard's Hearthstone, but maybe we should give it a chance. Also, Valve has a history of holding a beta for its titles in the past so we are hopeful that there will be a beta for the game given that every major card game released in recent years had closed and public betas. But with Valve's plans to make Steam run on mobile, the game making its way to smartphones and tablets is definitely a possibility.

This is everything we know so far about Valve's Artifact.
