North Korea Warns It Is Considering A Missile Attack On Guam

A USA strike against North Korea would need the support of South Korea, he said, because the North would likely retaliate against the South and its 600,000 troops.

With North Korea threatening to send a salvo of ballistic missiles close to Guam, a USA military hub in the Pacific, pressure could grow for Washington to put its multibillion-dollar missile defense system into use and shoot them out of the air.

Life on Guam is also deeply tied the military bases and the service members stationed at them. The air base was built in 1944, when the USA was preparing to send bombers to Japan during World War II. Today, Naval Base Guam is the home port for four nuclear-powered fast attack submarines and two submarine tenders.

Andersen Air Force Base hosts a Navy helicopter squadron and Air Force bombers that rotate to Guam from the USA mainland.

Guam elected its first governor in 1970 and, since 1972, has had one nonvoting delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"They've slowly developed their capabilities but we stand in high confidence with the US (Defense Department's) ability to not only defend Guam and the surrounding areas but also the continental US".

The United Nations this month tightened sanctions on Pyongyang after it tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles created to carry nuclear warheads to the United States.

Japan's missile defences include sea and land components.
