Mandi landslide: Death toll rises to five

30 Feared Dead As Landslide Sweeps Away 2 Buses In Himachal Pradesh

Teams from the Army and the National Disaster Response Force have been called in and have been working on rescuing those still trapped since 2 am on Sunday, he said.

Following the incident, the National Highway 21 from Mandi to Aut has been closed due to the threat of landslides.

The landslide hit Himachal Pradesh's Mandi on Saturday where four people were rescued from the debris.

The disaster spot is some 220 km from the state capital. The police said the two buses were parked on the highway while the passengers were out for snacks just before the landslide happened.

A more than 150 metre stretch of the road was washed away in the mudslide. Director General of Police Somesh Goyal said eight passengers were travelling in the Manali-Katra bus while 47 passengers were in the other bus.

Mangled remains of the bus bound for Katra in Jammu were retrieved.

The landslide swept away the road and the buses for nearly 800 metres down into a gorge and there was no trace of one of the buses which was completely buried under the debris so far. They believe 35-50 passengers were on the bus at the time of the incident.

"The exact number of missing persons is yet to be assessed".

Chief minister Virbhadra Singh will reportedly visit the site of the accident to take stock of the situation.
